Quick, can you segment your donors nine ways, grouped by the giving totals
in their highest fiscal year? You already have! The field called
Potential,
usually on the "Main" screen, does just that, and more,
automatically. Furthermore, you have complete control of the dollar range of
these segments (or splits as we call them).
It gets even better: if you think a donor is capable of giving more than the
Potential field reflects, you can adjust it upward. The system will
automatically adjust the Potential field upward based on the donor's actual
giving. But, it will never adjust it down if you have manually assigned a
higher number.
So, if you have donors whose contributions you want to grow over time, you
can assign them a potential giving value based on what you know about them,
not just their history with your organization. There are two financial
reports that make use of this. The
Giving Potential report gives you
a list of everyone whom you have assigned a higher potential than they have
actually given. The
High Potentials report will ask you to enter a
number from one to nine, and then give you everyone whose Potential is at
least that number or higher.
If you want to change the default dollar value ranges, it is easily done. In
the Visual Edition, go to
Utilities/ Change Parameters/ Other Parameters/
Calculated fields.
The new settings will take effect when you recalculate. To recalculate in
the Visual Edition, go to
Utilities/ Recalculate/ Recalculate Gift Totals.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you change the dollar range in Utilities, it does
not automatically change the codes in the list that you see on your screen.
Change them manually to make sure they match the ranges you have set.
